When I tour new places, I often visit hospitals and medical facilities. In Tuvalu, a Polynesian island nation located in the Pacific between Hawaii and Australia, I visited the hospital. I quickly learned there w as no dentist on the island, just an oral health therapist who was restricted to doing simple fillings and cleanings. One patient was in a great deal of pain from a deeply impacted wisdom tooth and planned to fly to Fiji for treatment. I offered to save him the trip and extract the tooth for him. I extracted his impacted tooth–even though the surgery was complicated because the suction equipment was broken, but everything worked out in the end and the patient and medical staffwere appreciative. I continued to provide much needed dental services for the remaining three days I was in Tuvalu.
